Elongated coins collectors update – mid-November 2015
New pricing policies
at eBay make it difficult for smaller dealers like me to
maintain complete
inventories on the auction site. My
complete inventory
will remain available
on my
own sales website at lower prices.
Note: I
will occasionally use catalog numbers from www.presscoins.com
for
Disney coins; that website provides the most complete information about current
and former designs at WDW.

60TH ANNIVERSARY COINS
TWO MACHINES ADDED TO CHINA November
2015 update:
Two machines have been added to the China pavilion at Epcot. One is in a store, and one is in an outdoor
walkway. This is the first time China
has received penny presses. More details to follow. ORLANDO
AIRPORT GETS DISNEY MACHINE A new machine was installed on Sept. 30 or
Oct. 1 at Disney’s Earport store (yes, it’s “Earport”). It has
a Frozen design (Elsa) previously available at the In Character store at Hollywood
Studios, and two new designs: pilot Mickey Mouse and pilot Stitch. I have them in stock on my sales page here.
There are two stores at the airport – the
once named “Disney’s Earport" is the one with
the machine. Above: Earport machine and faceplate |

COINS FOR SALE |
FIRST DISNEY SPRINGS COINS APPEAR
In October Downtown Disney was officially
renamed Disney Springs. The only machine
that had “downtown Disney” as part of the coin design, a machine outside
Marketplace Fun Finds (formerly Pooh Corner), has switched its designs. The new designs all mention Disney Springs
and became available in the middle of October.
The designs feature the Disney Springs logo, Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse,
and Goofy.
VERANDAH BREEZEWAY ADDS CHANGE MACHINE;
LION KING MACHINE JOINS IT
The two machines at Verandah Breezeway and
Island Supply (Lion King) have been reconfigured. They now share a cabinet in the Verandah
Breezeway, and a new change machine is placed between them. The change machine also distributes 2 shiny
zinc pennies with every dollar redeemed.
The first change machine I noticed
distributing pennies with quarters was at the Field Museum in Chicago. This may become a trend, especially in
locations where a cashier is not handy to provide change. At this point, though, this is the only
change machine I have seen at Disney World that distributes pennies.
Top: Frozen &
Heroines machines
Bottom: Frozen 8-die
mechanism
HEROINES AND FROZEN MACHINES NOW PROVIDING SHINY PENNIES
One criticism of the new Heroines 12-die
machine and the 8-die Frozen machine (Once Upon a Toy) was that it supplied its
own pennies, which could be circulated coins.
Now both machines are pressing shiny zinc pennies.
I have pressed coins in stock – they are
available on my sale website (Downtown Disney page for Frozen; Hollywood
Studios for Heroines).
CIRQUE DU SOLEIL MACHINE NOW OUTSIDE 24/7
In response to customer demand, the Cirque du
Soleil machine has been placed outside the gift shop at Disney Springs
(formerly Downtown Disney) and is accessible 24/7. It had previously been placed inside the gift
shop, which was closed two days a week.
HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS: MACHINES DISAPPEARING & APPEARING
Three machines are now gone from Hollywood
Studios in recent months: the 4-die In Character store machine (replaced by the
12-die "Heroines" machine); Big Hero 6 (a casualty of the closure of
the animation courtyard); and the Alice in Wonderland machine at Legends of Hollywood.
Meanwhile, a new 4-die crank machine has been
placed at Prop Shop featuring new designs from Monsters, Inc: Sulley, Mike, Boo and Randall (picture above). This machine was installed in August 2015.
The machine that used to be near the entrance
to the Lights, Motors, Action stunt show has moved again. Now it is near the entrance to Honey I Shrunk
the Kids playground, next to the machine that has always been at that location.
OTHER UPDATES
More news from October: There have been
rumblings among collectors about the penny presses at Disney World. Beyond the criticism of the price points for
the new electronic machines for Frozen and Heroines, there is a deeper problem
looming: nearly half the machines I tested in early October are rolling short
on copper and zinc coins.
The second-floor snack shop at the Polynesian
Village Resort has changed names from Samoa Snacks to Moana
Mercantile. Two machines remain outside
its entrance. The machine on the first
floor (formerly outside the now-closed Wyland
Gallery) had moved inside the BouTiki store, but now
it is at the main lobby’s rear door.
A quick note about machine locations:
machines are often moved across courtyards or within stores. Don’t give up on a machine location until you
have checked inside and outside. It may
even help to ask a store employee, although they are often uninformed about the
location of machines.
Star Wars: New black
and grey machine and old red machine
STAR WARS MACHINE STILL THERE
The Star Wars machine has remained at the
Prop Shop. In the past, it went
off-stage once Star Wars Weekends ended.
It has a new black and grey cabinet instead of the old red cabinet found
at Darth’s Mall.
SORCERER’S HAT SHOP
PENNY MACHINE COMES BACK
Presscoins.com reports that the Sorcerer’s
Hat penny machine has returned to Hollywood Studios and is found at Hollywood
Junction (corner of Hollywood Blvd. and Sunset Blvd.). I have not confirmed this independently.
NEW MACHINE AT ONCE UPON A TOY
On the heels of a new electronic machine at
In Character store (see below), www.presscoins.com reports that an 8-die
machine has been installed at the Once Upon a Toy store at Downtown
Disney. This new machine features a
numbered series of 8 Frozen designs.
After all, you can never have too much Frozen.
12-DIE MACHINE AT STUDIOS
Although it was announced on April 1, it is
not a hoax: a 12-die machine has been added at the In Character Shop at
Hollywood Studios. The machine costs $1 (or all 12 for $10).
The prior machine at this location has been
retired, but the Frozen design later reappeared at Disney’s Earport
store at Orlando International Airport.
A brief commentary: I do not like the idea
that the machine supplies a penny, nor do I like the $1 price point. The Field Museum in Chicago charged $1 when
it installed similar machines, but the price eventually dropped to 50
cents. I hope that happened because they
figured out that sales drop when prices rise that much.
MACHINE MOVES AT PORT ORLEANS
The music theme machine at Port Orleans
Riverside lobby has been moved to French Quarter, another part of the hotel
complex.
DISNEYLAND 60TH ANNIVERSARY
Disneyland will celebrate its 60th year. In talking to DL employees, I have learned
that the plan is to have 60 coins. The
coins will not correspond to particular events from each year (unlike the 50th
anniversary coins). There is a special
penny book for these coins, and Guest Relations has a handout showing the
machine locations and coin descriptions.
Some coins will be available during the
entire celebration. One of the machines
at the World of Disney store in Downtown Disney will have rotating coins – each
set of 3 available for about 60 days.
Since I don’t normally cover Disneyland news,
check with www.parkpennies.com
for up-to-date information as this program rolls out.
NEW: 60th
anniversary coins for sale.
NEW MACHINES AT DTD
Two 4-die hand-crank machines were added to
Downtown Disney in late February.
The first machine is placed inside
Marketplace Fun Finds (which used to be known as Pooh Corner, and still has a
machine outside its doors). Its designs
feature Mickey Mouse, Minnie, Goofy and Donald.
A second machine was placed in the gift shop
at Cirque du Soleil on Downtown Disney’s West Side. The designs do not include Disney characters
or wording.
DISNEY QUEST UPDATES
As noted earlier, the two Wreck-It Ralph
machines were sent to Disney Quest, where they can be found on the 3rd floor
along with 7 “Fix-It Felix Jr.” video games.
Other changes at Disney Quest: one machine
remains in the gift shop (although it has been moved adjacent to the
cashiers). The other machine has been
moved to the 2nd floor – it is no longer near the first-floor exit.
Disney Quest is slated to close in 2016. I am confident the machines will be retired
at that point.
2015 YEAR SETS
The 2014 coins started being replaced,
beginning January 1. The 2014 coins had
two designs (one for the penny, one for the quarter), with each design on seven
machines for a total of 14 locations (get it?
for 2014).
Those 2014 coins were replaced by seven
quarters and seven pennies. Some designs
appear on both denominations; others appear on a single coin only.
Here are the locations of the new coins and
their designs: Magic
Kingdom castle:
quarter: Main Street Railroad Station; penny: Emporium front door (Magic
Kingdom) Mickey
Mouse: quarter:
Contemporary Resort; penny: Sir Mickey’s (Magic Kingdom) Donald
Duck:
quarter: All Star Sports resort; penny: Mouse Gear (Epcot) Nemo: quarter: The Land (Epcot); penny: Chester
& Hester’s (Animal Kingdom) Tinker
Bell:
quarter: Mickey’s of Hollywood (Hollywood Studios); penny: Contemporary
Resort Pluto: quarter only: Harambe Railroad station (Animal Kingdom) Daisy
Duck:
quarter only: All Star Music resort Minnie
Mouse:
penny only: Prop Shop (Hollywood Studios) Goofy: penny only: Grand

Sticker on machines |
In addition, to recognize the “15” in 2015,
there is a fifteenth coin – a Chip & Dale 2015 coin at the Splash
Mountain store. That coin does not have
a quarter counterpart. The Chip &
Dale die replaced the design that showed Brer Rabbit
with the Splash Mountain logo. This new
design has Chip & Dale riding in a log.
All these new coins feature the “2015” year
prominently as part of their designs.
BIG CHANGES AT ARCADES
According to local media reports (Orlando
Sentinel story here), Disney feels its arcade program
might run into trouble under Florida’s tightened internet café laws. As a result, the Tomorrowland
Light & Power Co. arcade adjacent to Space Mountain is being slated for
closure in February. In addition,
arcades at hotels are losing their claw machines and their redemption counters,
due to limits on the value of prizes that can be awarded. The law will also require the arcades to
switch to all-cash payments into the machines, making the arcade cards
obsolete.
While hotel arcades will operate within new
guidelines, the fate of the Tomorrowland building –
and its penny presses – is not certain at this time.
February
2015 update:
the arcade at Tomorrowland Power & Light is
closed. The three Space Mountain pressed
coin machines remain available. The
quarter machine, which was placed at times in the arcade, is toward the back of
the gift shop. Hotel arcades remain in
operation and are still using arcade cards instead of coins.
SORCERER’S HAT CLOSED
The Sorcerer’s
Hat store closed on January 6. The
hat has been removed. The machines
are considered retired. July 2015
update: the penny machine has come back to Hollywood Studios.
WANDERING OAKEN’S SHOP CLOSED
The Frozen-themed attraction at Hollywood
Studios also closed the first week of January.
Its machine has been moved to the Prop Shop.
OTHER UPDATES
The Prop
Shop machine with classic characters has moved to the Settlement Trading
Post at Fort Wilderness. Those dies had
previously appeared in two separate machines at Cap’n
Jack’s restaurant at Downtown Disney.
DECEMBER 2014 UPDATE
The following changes were noted during my
visit from December 6 through December 10:
Animal Kingdom’s machine at Dawa Bar is back in service after nearly a
year off stage during construction of the entryway to the new theatre for the
Festival of the Lion King.
Machines
off stage:
Heritage House at Magic Kingdom; Zanzibar/Island Supply Co. at Magic
Kingdom; all 3 machines at Settlement Trading Post (Fort Wilderness Resort);
African Outpost at Epcot. January update: the 3 Settlement
machines are temporarily relocated to the bus stop at Wilderness Lodge. February
2015 update: The 3 machines were still at Wilderness Lodge’s bus stop as of
February 26. All other listed machines
were back on-stage as of late February. October
2015 update: Those machines at the bus stop are still there.
The name of the Polynesian Resort has changed slightly to Polynesian Village
Resort. The machine formerly outside the
now-closed Wyland Gallery has been moved inside the
store across the hall, BouTiki.
All the Frozen
designs are active and available. Bring
your patience, as lines of girls (young and old) are flocking to these coins.
Wandering
Oaken’s Trading Post at Hollywood Studios
has moved into the space once used by the AFI exhibit at the Backlot Tour exit. The Backlot
Tour has ceased operations.
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) will be
sponsoring the Great Movie Ride. As part
of the deal, the Chinese Theatre will be restored to its original iconic role
at the end of Hollywood Boulevard with the removal of the Sorcerer’s Hat. It is not
known what will happen to the store under that hat and the 2 machines at that
location, but there’s a good chance the Prop Shop will continue to serve as a
holding area for machines without a home.
New resource: CTM Group maintains the machines at Disney World. They have maps of machine locations at their
website (www.ctmgroupinc.com/disney).
The machines are numbered for maintenance purposes, and now you can text
that machine’s number to CTM when it is broken.
These signs are being added to machines throughout the property. I think it’s just a matter of time before we
will start referring to the machines by their numbers, helping us track them
when they’re off-stage or relocated.
NEW COIN BOOK FOR 2014
A new penny book was issued in the last half
of 2014. It has 4 pages, and holds 48
pennies and 9 quarters. The retail price
is $8.95. It is the same size as the
2012 book – the cover is 7” x 4”.
Visit
my page devoted to Disney penny books.
MACHINE RETURNS TO
FANTASIA GARDENS
The rapid deployment of “Frozen” coins,
coupled with the introduction of 7 pennies and 7 quarters commemorating the
year 2014 back in January, means a lot of coins went into apparent retirement
status this year. As we expected, some
of those coins have slipped back into machines later.
Now comes word that a penny machine has been
reintroduced to the mini-golf attraction, Fantasia Gardens. This location near the Boardwalk resort lost
its machine in 2012, and its coins made a brief re-appearance at Hollywood
Studios in February.
The new machine has been restocked with dies
that had been "retired" during 2014: Sorcerer Mickey (an original
Fantasia Gardens design that moved to two different machines at Hollywood
Studios during the year); the wicked stepmother and step sisters (Cinderella #5
of 5) (a Legends of Hollywood design that was replaced by Frozen in September
2014); and the White Rabbit from the Alice in Wonderland series (#3 of 6) (also
from Legends of Hollywood, and replaced by Frozen).

BIG HERO 6 DESIGNS
Three designs from the new Disney movie “Big
Hero 6” were placed in a new machine at the Hollywood Studios meet-and-greet
area in the Magic of Disney Animation building.
Characters depicted are Baymax, Hiro, and Fred. October
2015 update: This machine is now retired.
RALPH MOVES DOWNTOWN
The two Wreck-it Ralph machines at Prop Shop
have moved to Disney Quest in Downtown Disney.
Given the movie’s video-game theme, this is a good fit for Ralph and
Company. I do not yet know whether
the machines are accessible without paying admission. March update: admission payment required.
JAPAN GETS 2 MACHINES;
DUFFY INCLUDED
Two machines were added to Japan in
October. Each is a 4-die machine. One of the coins depicts Duffy in Japanese
dress. This makes 9 current Duffy coins
available at Disney World (Animal Kingdom, Sailor, China, Canada, UK, US,
Germany, and Mexico), plus one retired (France). Each machine has a design similar – but not
identical – to retired Japan-themed coins that had been removed from other machines
(Minnie Mouse in a kimono , and Mickey Mouse in front of a Torii gate).
OSCAR’S GOES BIG TIME –
GETS 3-DIE MACHINE
Oscar’s Super Service at Hollywood Studios
was the only single-die penny machine in the parks. All that changed in September, when the
machine was replaced with a three-die unit.
Doc Hudson – the former resident of the
machine – is off stage, leaving a gap in the Cars numbered series. The three dies are all designs that had been
replaced during the summer:
Snow White – from In
Character store
Sorcerer’s Apprentice
Mickey – from Prop Shop (formerly at Fantasia Gardens) November update: this coin has moved to a new
machine at Fantasia Gardens; the Cheshire Cat [Alice in Wonderland #2 of 6] has
replaced it.
Aladdin - from Prop
Shop (formerly at Fantasia Gardens)
The only single-die penny machine left at
Disney World is the machine at House of Blues (Downtown Disney). There are still a few single-die quarter
machines at Disney World, too.
PROP SHOP/FANTASIA GARDENS
MACHINE GONE
The machine that had been at Fantasia Gardens
until 2012, but returned in February 2014 to Prop Shop at Hollywood Studios, is
gone again. Two of its coins are now
in the Oscar’s machine discussed above.
November update: One of its coins is at Oscar’s, and one is in the new
machine at Fantasia Gardens.
FROZEN – THE GIFT THAT KEEPS ON GIVING
- 17 COINS!
The movie “Frozen” has been a massive hit,
with lines to meet the characters extending as long as 4 hours first at Norway,
and now Fantasyland. Even Voices of
Liberty at Epcot’s American Adventure are including “Let It Go” in their
repertoire of patriotic songs (a sacrilege, if you ask me). It is no surprise, then, that characters from
the film are now being featured on pressed coins.
Three penny designs were added in April:
Olaf – Disney Traders - replaced tourist
Mickey Mouse/Japan
Elsa – International Gateway – replaced
Minnie Mouse in kimono
Anna – Mouse Gear – replaced road crossing
sign (ex-Test Track)
Five more designs were added in June:
Olaf – Mickey’s of Hollywood – replacing
Syndrome (Incredibles)
Elsa - In Character Shop – replacing Snow
White
Elsa & Anna – Emporium – replacing
“Celebrating 40 Years of Magic”
Elsa - Sir Mickey’s – replacing Grumpy
Kristoff & Sven – Island
Mercantile – replacing safari Pooh
In July,
an area of Disney’s Hollywood Studios was converted to a “Frozen”-themed
multiplex called Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post &
Frozen Funland.
This area started where Darth’s Mall was found in May/June, just past
Toy Story Midway Mania. As part of this
new attraction, a new penny press machine was added. The machine (shown below) contains three dies
that also appear elsewhere – so nothing new.
Those designs are:
Anna – same design as Mouse Gear
Elsa – same design as Sir Mickey’s
Olaf – same design as Mickey’s of Hollywood
At the end of September the attraction was
moved to the former AFI exhibit at the end of the Backlot
Tour. December update: the machine is
in the former Backlot Tour exit area. February 2015 update: the machine was moved
to Prop Shop.
Also in July,
Epcot’s Puffin’s Roost Shop in Norway caught up with the theme, and added
another repeat design:
Anna & Elsa – same design as Main Street
Emporium – replaced Mickey Mouse holding flags
In September,
five new designs were added. The entire
machine at Legends of Hollywood was replaced with Frozen:
Anna – machine in Legends of Hollywood
replaces the machine with Alice in Wonderland/Cinderella designs
Anna & Elsa – at Legends of Hollywood machine
Olaf – at Legends of Hollywood machine
Kristoff – Mouse Gear at
Epcot, replaces Epcot logo coin
Olaf – Verandah Breezeway at Magic Kingdom,
replaces Adventureland logo
If you doubted the Frozen overkill, we now
have 13 different Frozen designs represented by 17 different coins in 13
machines. There are no reported Frozen
designs at Downtown Disney or the resorts (yet?). Note these are not a numbered series. The sky’s the limit.
