DATED COINS Although there have been
prior series of coins with dates, the current dated coins began on January 1,
2011, when a penny was added to the machine inside the Emporium’s door. After that, the die at the Emporium was switched
every January 1 to include a coin for the new year. In 2014 the idea expanded to 14 machines,
and in 2015 it expanded to 15 machines.

The other two coins in the Emporium sets were the
“celebrating 40 years” design (which was retired in 2014) and "Let the
Memories Begin” (which remains current). These designs can be rather busy, and it’s hard to
make out the subject. The 2012 coin
shows Mickey, Goofy, Donald and Pluto behind the year 2012; the second “2” is
wearing Mickey Mouse ears. Emporium – 2012

2014
was the first year for a dated quarter.
Also, for the first time, the dated coin was not limited to the
Emporium store at the Magic Kingdom.
Instead, to reflect the “14,” there were 7 penny locations and 7
quarter locations. There were,
however, only two designs: the penny design and the quarter design. While there may have been tiny differences
at the various locations, no significant differences have been spotted. The
penny has Sorcerer Mickey in front of 2014.

The 14 locations used in 2014 were repeated in 2015,

These coins were available
from around New Year’s 2021 to late September, when they began being replaced
with the 50th anniversary coins. Some were unavailable on an
intermittent basis due to COVID closures and renovations. These
pennies come from a disappointing time of transition at Disney World when the
vendor was introducing circulated pennies into the machines. Many of these coins would not meet our
quality standards. All rolled coins
will have full images, but the zinc may be showing through on the designs and
many coins will definitely appear to be made from circulated ZINC coins.
The poor quality of
coins forced upon us by the vendor caused us to cut back on our normal
purchasing, so only a few copies of some items are available. Two coins – from
Polynesian Resort and Art of Animation Resort – are rolled on my uncirculated
copper cents. The quality of all other
coins was at the mercy of the vendor. Coins 2021P.1 and
2021P.14 through 19 were previously available as our set of 7 pennies, set
#2021P. Coins 2021P.2 through
5 were previously available as a set of 4, set #MK63. Coins 2021P.6 through
13 were previously available as a combined set (#MK62), which consolidated
eight dated coins from the two Emporium machines into a single year set. |
2021 These are singles
with the 2021 date, including those dispensed by the 4- and 8-die sets
available at the Magic Kingdom (which were numbered as Presscoins
#WDW21002-21013). These are all the
coins that were issued bearing the 2021 date.
There were no quarters in this series. These singles are made of zinc (often circulated) unless
