The world’s largest city can be
overwhelming and it takes some effort to find penny presses (called
“medallion machines” there). A listing
that says a machine is located in a train station is like an American listing
saying that a machine is in a village – train stations can be half a mile
long and have 4 stories of train platforms and 3 stories of shopping centers
attached! The machines there use
copper-coated blanks provided by the machines. The insides are probably zinc, but the
copper is thick enough that you do not see evidence of zinc streaks on the
surfaces. Those blanks are also about
the size of a nickel, so if you save your coins in 2x2 holders you will want
to use the ones with larger openings to store Japanese elongated coins. Size
comparison: Japan vs. USA The vendors typically charge 200
yen per coin. Tokyo Disney charges
less – 100 yen – as do some locations off the Disney property. Our prices vary depending on the
acquisition costs. |

Machines in
Japan have a coin straightener built into the machine. While the coin is still hot, guests will
press the coin and apply pressure against an outline on a metal plate on the
machine to take the curve out of the coin.
If you are waiting in line, you have to wait until the guests ahead of
you finish straightening the coin before you can step up and insert your
money. |
In general, we made 5 extra sets of each lot for
resale. When they run out, we will not
be restocking them. |

Tokyo Disneyland is laid out pretty
much like Disneyland and Magic Kingdom in the U.S. The primary machine location is the Penny
Arcade, but machines are also found in various stores and restaurants. All the machines appear to be
manufactured by Eurolink but with larger
cabinets. The machines may have 1, 2
or 3 dies, and all are electric button-operated machines. They roll remarkably well. Although I have seen misaligned coins in
the past, all of the coins on this trip came out well. I did not see any machine that was out of
order, although I only visited one machine at Disney Sea and 70% of the
machines at Disneyland. Additional machines are located at
Tokyo Disney Sea, the Resort Line monorails stations, and various hotels run
by Disney and by other companies in the area.
Some restrict entry to registered guests. It is very difficult to roll multiple
coins at the Disney resort. The
machines are very popular, and guests queue up in the last few hours of park
operations to get coins. Cast members
will ask you to step aside if you are rolling more than one set, so rolling
multiple sets may mean getting back in line multiple times and waiting for 10
or 20 guests ahead of you to roll theirs each time. Go early when the guests are all running to
get in the Beauty & The Beast line! Catalog numbers are from the Souvenir
Medallion website at https://torapooh.main.jp/index_e.htm

TOKYO
DISNEYLAND I found only a single 3-coin
machine at the Penny Arcade. There is
reportedly a machine in the Fantasy Springs hotel as well, but I was unable
to go there. Typer tokens used to be found at
Disneyland in California as well as other theme parks and attractions across
the country. The machines allowed
guests to stamp names and numbers on an anodized aluminum token, but these
took a lot of abuse and the market for replacement tokens dried up. Other tourist locations in Japan
have a different kind of typer token that uses a heavy metal coin – at those
locations, you buy the medallion from a machine, and then pay a second
machine toa dd your inscription. I
found three such machines in Kyoto, outside Nagoya, and in Tokyo. The Tokyo Disney machines do everything in
a single machine, and use a larger and lighter token (again, aluminum). |
The machine at the arcade allows
you to choose from 3 designs: Mickey Mouse Happy Birthday (copper color);
Mickey & Pluto (copper color); and Minnie Mouse (light red color). All feature identical reverse designs with
the Tokyo Disneyland castle logo. Being aluminum coins, these tokens
show signs of scratching from being stacked in the dispenser. We have a very limited number of
sets. |

RESORT LINE MONORAIL STATIONS Each monorail station has 2
machines with 3 designs each. They
rotate a lot of dated coins here for each new year. You can access some machines
without buying a monorail ticket if you are staying in a hotel or visiting a
park served by that station, but if you are just riding the monorail to reach
each machine you will generally have to leave and re-enter gated areas where
a monorail ticket is required. The
daily monorail pass (700 yen) is your most affordable option. For train/monorail collectors, we
have selected the monorail designs to create a special set of 5 (our set
JP17). If you purchase all of the
individual station sets, you will already have these 5 monorail coins. |

ALL
MONORAILS: SPECIAL SET OF 5 For train collectors, we selected
the 5 designs depicting monorails for a special set, and all are dated for
year 2025. There is technically a
sixth dated coin relating to monorails, but it only shows a Mickey-shaped handstrap used inside the monorails and does not show the
monorail itself. That sixth coin is
omitted from this set. If you buy the individual sets
listed above, you will already have the monorail coins included in this
special set. |
