sign of spring and the state’s official bird. We have limited quantities on zinc and on uncleaned
wheat pennies.

MICHIGAN COIN CLUB SPRING CONVENTION Kalamazoo, Michigan The
Michigan coin club’s semi-annual show was held in Kalamazoo this year (May
8-10, 2025). A creative design with a
bee, flowers, and the club’s logo was rolled by Ryan & Justin Manley. We were
able to pick up a small number of coins rolled on shiny zinc pennies. The machine was not located at the show,
though, so we were unable to roll any on copper. We’re
offering these for a dime, with a limit of one per family. Sorry, but to be fair to all, multiple
orders can’t be placed. We only have
about a dozen available. |

Coleman A. Young Municipal Center – a/k/a city hall); and the Olde English D
(symbol of the Detroit Tigers and numerous area businesses). This

KAWAII
BUBBLE TEA Clinton Township, Michigan
New machine in 2023.
The penny press was originally located in downtown Mt. Clemens but
moved to the Clinton Township location when the downtown location
closed. This owner proudly includes

Designs: Cartoon panda Cartoon fox Cartoon cup of bubble tea
QUARTERS!
We are finally stocking the Kawaii
Bubble Tea sets on quarters. These are
rolled on BU U.S. quarters, and this is the complete set of 3. Here’s the story behind these. When Kawaii Bubble Tea ordered a penny
press for their Mt. Clemens location, the engraver mistakenly made oversized
dies using the quarter-size template.
New penny-sized dies were rapidly prepared, and when installed the
machine rolled pennies. The quarter dies sat idle until
Kawaii opened a second location, on Garfield Road in nearby Clinton
Township. They decided to use the
quarter dies at that location.
Eventually the Mt. Clemens location closed and the penny press moved
to Clinton Township, where it now sits side-by-side with the quarter
machine. Both machines press the
identical designs, but in different sizes (large/small) and on different host
coins (quarters/pennies). |

wooden nickels from the 2016 Fairy Tale Festival at the Edsel & Eleanor
Ford House. Edsel Ford was Henry
Ford’s only child, the namesake of the car, and the president of the Ford

Lake St. Clair is open for tours and hosts various events for the local
community, including Fairy Tale Days for the youngsters. I believe these wooden nickels were used as
tickets for rides and games. The
bottom two designs are painted, and each coin will vary slightly in clarity

standard printed wooden nickel. The
rear of all wooden nickels is blank. Set

CROSSROADS VILLAGE/ HUCKLEBERRY RAILROAD Flint, Michigan The county park is open
seasonally. Set #MI47 has the coins
that are available during the summer operations. Designs: Locomotive #2 from Huckleberry
Railroad; carousel horse from 1912 C.W. Parker carousel; C.W. Parker Superior
Wheel (a small Ferris wheel); Genesee Belle steam paddleboat. This machine was purchased
and renovated by the legendary Ray Dillard, and he designed the coins. The “Friends of the Carousel” group owns
the machine and all proceeds support their effort to preserve and operate the
carousel and Parker Superior Wheel.
Ray even trained some of their members to switch out the dies
seasonally and maintain the machine.
All four coins have Ray’s initials.
This the only Michigan machine (and for all I know, any machine
nationally) that Ray set up for unassisted public coin-operated use. After Labor Day, the dies in
the same machine are switched to Halloween and Christmas themes to coincide
with special seasonal events (mainly on weekends); that is set #MI48. Designs: Jack-o-lantern; ghost; snowman;

CAR MUSEUM Hickory Corners, Michigan
The
Gilmore Car Museum is located in farmland north of the Battle Creek/Kalamazoo
area. It is presented as a village
with different buildings holding distinct collections. One building replicates an old Ford
dealership and houses a Ford Model A collection. The building also has the museum’s only
penny press, which dispenses five penny designs. All
designs feature Ford Model A vehicles: 1929 Town Car, 1928 Sport Coupe, 1930
fire truck, 1931 roadster, and 1931 pickup truck. All have a backstamp featuring an image of
the building, as shown in the picture.
Remember – you will receive 5 coins. These
were rolled on copper cents that have been cleaned, so they do not have the
perfect luster of an uncirculated coin and may show signs of streaking. Although the coins are a small tight oval,
they do not roll short – the designs and border dots are fully intact, as you
can see from the representative photo.
This is typical of designs from The Penny Press Machine Company (5-die
and 4-die machines). |
