SANDUSKY AREA

Added in early September 2024 . . . CEDAR POINT Sandusky, Ohio Cedar Point had more than a dozen penny presses. In our September 2024 visit, we found only 5 machines. All Cedar Point machines roll on circulated zinc pennies that have been cleaned by a vendor. We have weeded out the nasty ones, but you might find a little visible wear on some coins.

SNOOPY & THE PEANUTS GANG PennyCollector machine 19 is now located at the entrance to the Coliseum Arcade. Designs: 1) Planet Snoopy with Snoopy dancing (V); 2) Linus sucking his thumb w/ Snoopy on his blanket (H); 3) Snoopy holding a heart (V). NEW COMBINATION OF OLD DIES AT ARCADE This machine features a: new combination of old dies, and is located at the Coliseum Arcade entrance. Designs: 1) Vertical Cedar Point skyline (ex-machine 26) (V); 2) Horizontal Cedar Point skyline (ex-machine 25) (H); 3) “Cedar Point on Lake Erie” with chair and beach umbrella (ex-machine 26) (V). 3 COASTER LOGOS MAKE A SET Another new combination of old dies, also located at the Coliseum Arcade entrance. FRONTIER TOWN SET FEATURES A DESIGN PREVIOUSLY UNREPORTED This machine is: located on the porch of the Frontier Town General Store/Trading Post. Designs: 1) (H); 2) Cedar Point word logo on one line (ex-machine 22) Maverick (ex-machine 22) (H); 3) Steel Vengeance (new design not found previously) (H). KALAHARI RESORT Sandusky, Ohio We have all three penny presses, plus medallions from the resort near Cedar Point. None of these include the city’s name, so they may be similar to designs at other Kalahari locations. Set OH46 has streaking on all the coins. We are assuming cleaned pennies were used during rolling. The other sets look BU. MARBLEHEAD LIGHTHOUSE Marblehead, Ohio Ohio’s most famous lighthouse – the oldest lighthouse on the Great Lakes (1821); complete set of 4 pressed on copper. The coins have a backstamp with “Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society.” The photo shows all 4 designs plus the backstamp featured on each. Designs: lighthouse, long view; top of lighthouse close-up; keeper’s house; life-saving station. Designs: outline of island with “KI”; one of the island ferries, monarch butterfly (the Lake Erie islands are part of the monarchs’ migration path); Patmos lighthouse (a privately-maintained unofficial light built by a church camp in 1971). MERRY-GO-ROUND MUSEUM Sandusky, Ohio There are two machines in this fascinating museum in the old downtown post office. We have complete sets of 4 from the two machines, and a limited number of singles from the one-die machine on both copper AND uncirculated bimetal Ecuador 100 sucres. All these copper cents are rolled on uncirculated Canadian 1964 pennies with the maple leafs showing faintly on the reverse. TOLEDO ZOO 10 new machines were installed in mid-2019. COMPLETE SETS: I am able to offer all 10 machines with 39 coins (instead of 40). The parakeets coin from the Aviary has been out of service for several months over a year three years. All these sets are retired. New machines were installed in 2023 or 2024, but there are only 3 new machines. The new machines are rolling poorly, so we are not stocking them yet.

TOLEDO WALLEYE/TOLEDO MUDHENS MACHINE RETURNED IN DECEMBER 2022 NEW TO OUR LISTINGS MAY 2023 I finally had a chance to track down the elusive Toledo Walleye (hockey) machine that was first reported on PennyCollector in December 2022. As some suspected, this appears to be the same machine that had been located at the Toledo Mudhens’ minor league baseball stadium. These dies are worn (making many features indistinguishable) and roll slightly short, and I was only able to get 4 sets after employees allowed me into the locked arena. Rolled on uncirculated copper cents. Complete set of 4 pennies, with backstamp on each.

BASS PRO ROSSFORD (TOLEDO) ROLLED ON ECUADOR BIMETAL COINS These are a real treat – the complete set of Bass Pro designs from northern Ohio rolled on uncirculated bimetal coins that make the designs pop Do you like these new bimetal coins? You can purchase uncirculated rolls below. UNCIRCULATED ROLL: ECUADOR 100 SUCRES Bank roll of 20 x 100 sucres from Ecuador. These bimetal coins are the diameter of a U.S. penny, but slightly thicker. Some commercial penny presses will not accept these because of their thickness, but they are great for private rollers or coin collectors. GREAT LAKES SCIENCE CENTER Cleveland, Ohio Complete set of 3 coins from the science museum on Lake Erie. All pressed on uncirculated copper cents. New machine in 2018. Contrary to earlier listings on pennycollector, these coins do not have backstamps (a prior machine with different designs did, though). One of the coins is now blocked, so the 2022-2023 version of this machine is only a 2-die machine. We have all three designs. DENNISON DEPOT MUSEUM Dennison, Ohio (far east of Columbus – we know!) Complete set of 4 rolled on uncirculated copper cents. These are without blemishes. This railroad depot served as an important stop for troops in World War 2 – a place where they could enjoy food and relaxation before heading to the east coast for shipment to Europe. Designs: Dennison Depot/Thermos Bottle Engine (this type of locomotive was filled with boiling water and had no firebox, eliminating the risk of a spark in mines or factories where a spark could be deadly); Dennison Depot – depot building; Ohio Central Railroad/Engine 1551; Dennison Depot/Engine 2700. OHIO HISTORY CENTER/ OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION Columbus, Ohio The history museum at the state fairgrounds added a penny press within the past couple years. It’s a 3-die Eurolink machine. OHIO HISTORY CENTER/ OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION WOODEN NICKEL Columbus, Ohio The history museum’s gift shop features a wooden nickel with the state seal and the Ohio History Connection logo. These wooden nickels are new, but they have stray ink marks from the printing process, and some have slight wear. OH-WN03 - $1.79

OHIO STATEHOUSE Columbus, Ohio Complete set of 4 rolled on uncirculated copper cents. These are without blemishes. The capitol in Columbus is called the Statehouse, and it is one of few state capitols without a visible dome. It has a cupola instead, but there’s actually a dome under that cupola visible only from inside. Designs: Ohio State Flag; Ohio Statehouse; state seal; official symbols of Ohio. It’s been a few years since we had this set in stock. OH27 - $5.99

OHIO STATEHOUSE WOODEN NICKEL Columbus, Ohio The state capitol’s gift shop features a wooden nickel with the statehouse and a script “Ohio.” These wooden nickels are new, but some have slight wear. They also are not perfectly centered. OH-WN02 - $1.79

* CHERRY STREET DINER Ashville, Ohio This place is heaven for penny collectors. Not only do they have their own penny press (which, unfortunately, now costs $1 per coin, plus your penny), but they have a pegboard with more than a dozen sets from prior years. The coins switched each year, with an emphasis on the Circleville Pumpkin Show (where the diner typically operated a food booth with the penny press), and other political and patriotic themes. Item #OH61 is the current set of 3 pennies from this location; these are rolled on cleaned and polished copper cents. The designs are Cherry Street Diner logo; 2018 Circleville Pumpkin Show; and 2019 Circleville Pumpkin Show. We are trying to gather additional information for more recent shows, but they appear to be handled by a different company or roller and recently have borne markings for sponsor Ohio Health. 8-DIE MACHINE AT GREAT WOLF LODGE Mason, OH (near King’s Island) This 8-die machine dispenses zinc pennies and replaced a 4-die machine that used your own quarters and pennies. These designs have never been available on copper – just zinc. Unfortunately, this machine rolls inconsistently. Expect most coins to be slightly short, and some will be off-center. GREAT WOLF LODGE Mason, Ohio This branch of the familiar themed hotel is adjacent to King’s Island north of Cincinnati. Its 4-die penny press features characters Wiley and Violet, MagiQuest dragon, and an astronaut (a nod to Ohio’s slogan as “the birthplace of aviation”). The machine was retired in, we think, 2021 and replaced with an 8-die machine that dispenses zinc pennies. FOR OTHER GREAT WOLF LODGE:

BICYCLE MUSEUM OF AMERICA New Bremen, Ohio This unique museum has a penny press with a single design. The coin has a backstamp describing a local historical fact (shown as second coin in photo). One copper cent. The museum remains open, but this machine was beyond repair and was reported retired in September 2021. In March 2022 it was reported back in service.

THE CONE West Chester, Ohio (4P, with backstamp) Pennycollector lists this location as “The Cone in West.” The name of the business is simply “The Cone,” and it is located in West Chester (north of Cincinnati). It is a seasonal business open from approximately March to September. The complete set of 4 features several police badges and the building. Unfortunately, the machine rolls very short, cutting off the dates and other aspects of the design elements. These sets are pressed on copper cents that have been cleaned and polished using professional methods (that’s why the catalog number includes “cp”). ENTERTRAINMENT JUNCTION West Chester (Cincinnati), Ohio This railroad-themed party center and hobby store boasts the world’s largest model train layout (Miniatur Wunderland in Germany and Northlandz in New Jersey make the same claim). Pennies from the 4-die press have a backstamp with the attraction’s address and phone number. Designs: diesel locomotive; steam locomotive; Entertrainment Junction logo; Amazen Funhouse logo. This machine was reportedly retired in 2018. That report was incorrect – the machine was still on-site as of September 2020. However, this attraction is going out of business in January 2025.

I do not normally carry these current Turnpike pennies due to their quality, price, and the time necessary to roll them (these are the slowest machines I have ever encountered). OHIO TURNPIKE – Mahoning Valley service plaza Westbound mile marker 237 Complete set of 4 pressed on new zinc pennies dispensed by the machine. These roll off-centered - I have not found any of the turnpike machines rolling with well-centered designs. They have a high price point at the machine, the machines are slow as all get-out (as my mom would say), and they are only available on zinc, so I have no current plans to stock other locations along the turnpike.
