RIVIERA
RESORT We don’t know the complete official story, but here’s a
reliable unofficial version of these sets.
When Riviera was getting ready to open in December
2019, Disney’s vendor placed an 8-die machine in the building and activated
it. The machine was reportedly
available for only a single day (December 10) during media previews, when a
Disney executive apparently caught wind of its existence and ordered it
removed. The machine was placed in a
closet – so near, and yet so far, and we know of no public access to it for
more than three years. There were two factors at play. First, and this is definitely unofficial
but comes from a reliable collector, Disney Vacation Club wants to keep its
properties “exclusive” to members and objected that a penny press would
attract unwashed collectors like you and me.
Second, the vendor who controls all penny presses at Disney World has
been known to overstep its bounds in the past, so placing a machine in a
discouraged location is not a huge surprise.
Remember, the vendor put its Pennycollector.com inscription on the
border of the Toy Story Land set of 4 Pixar pennies a few years ago, and had
to replace those dies within a few days.
They also switched to circulated coins in all their machines in 2021,
which caused a ton of complaints to Disney about its quality standards and
resulted in the vendor going back to uncirculated zinc cents. For whatever reason, the machine was returned to a
public area in mid-March 2023. And
that’s good news.

CARIBBEAN BEACH
RESORT 8-DIE MACHINE REPLACED 4 3-DIE SETUPS
After nearly two
years of refurbishment, the Caribbean Beach Resort in 2018 reopened its Old
Port Royale building. In the process,
it retired 4 machines on the property (3 at Old Port Royale, and one at
Custom House) and replaced them with this 8-die machine in October 2018. The zinc coins are all themed to Pirates of

In
April 2018 a series of 3-die machines was added to five hotels in the Disney
Springs area. Later that summer 3-die
machines were added in 3 more area hotels. Some
sets were reported as retired by Presscoins.com shortly after the coronavirus
shutdown. Then there were reports that
all the Disney Stores in these locations were closed due to lack of
traffic. Still,
three machines survived: Wyndham has 2 machines (including one relocated from
a Hilton); and Hilton Bonnet Creek kept its machine for more than an
additional year. Some
of these dies have popped up in the theme parks and in off-property Disney
stores in the Orlando/Kissimmee area.
Those machines only dispense zinc coins, though. Pressed

HOLIDAY INN ORLANDO) In late 2020 this machine, which had been retired from the Holiday
Inn, popped up on the pool level at the Wyndham It is no longer marked as a retired
machine. It was converted to dispense zinc
pennies at a higher price in October 2021.
We rolled these at Wyndham on uncirculated copper pennies
before the changeover to zinc
