Coins in Toronto are extremely expensive – CN Tower charges $2 per coin

TORONTO RAILWAY MUSEUM

ON16.TorontoRwyMuseumB.jpg

This is a fantastic museum in downtown Toronto just a couple blocks from Union Station.  A coin press makes three designs on bright brass tokens supplied by the machine.  The tokens are slightly larger than a penny.  Designs: caboose; Cabin D (an interlocking tower); 1896 Don Station (a relocated train station).

OF THE CN TOWER MACHINES

ON17.CNTower.EN.jpg

Obverse: English

ON17.CNTower.FR.jpg

Reverse: French

Perhaps the most famous structure in Toronto, the CN Tower has several coin presses but most are duplicate designs.  Out of 4 machines (16 coins), 7 are unique designs.

We pressed a small quantity on uncirculated U.S. nickels at the locations, eliminating the duplicate designs.  Three have the same artwork but mention different elevation levels for various features of the CN Tower (the SkyPod, the Glass Floor, and the Lookout.

These are inscribed in French on one side and English on the other.  Photos show both sides – you are buying 7 coins.  The frosted look on two coins is the result of lighting – they have the same look as the other coins.  Note that some roll short.

We were only able to roll 2 sets for selling.

GRAND BEND, ONTARIO

Grand Bend Sweet Shop

Grand Bend is a tourist town on the Ontario side of Lake Huron.  This is a set of 3 designs pressed on brass tokens supplied by the machine.  The tokens are between the size of a penny and a nickel.

Designs: sailboat; lighthouse; stylized sunset with waves.  The lighthouse coin always rolls off-center, cutting off the bottom beaded border.

NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA

Niagara Falls is the anti-Disney.  Disney takes an artificial concept and makes it as good as they can.  Niagara Falls, Ontario, takes a natural beauty and does whatever it can to harm the experience.  READ MORE  I have limited quantities of these coins because it can be so frustrating to get them.

Machines are being removed from the Niagara Falls area because of the loss of the penny in Canada.  The locations with tokens seem to be maintaining their presence.

There was a single coin at the visitor center/museum at Lock 3 (there are 8 locks along the 27-mile canal connecting Lakes Erie and Ontario).  The machine supplied its own blank token, which is slightly larger than a penny.

Design: Great Lakes freighter.

RAINFOREST CAFÉ

Niagara Falls, Ontario

SOLD OUT

ON03.RFb.jpg

The Rainforest Café on Clifton Hill has a setup similar to the Great Wolf Lodge outside of town.  A change machine distributes loonies with a token (same as used at the Welland Canal and Souvenir City machines) that you insert into the penny press.  You can even put a loonie (dollar coin) in the change machine and get a loonie plus a token.

Some websites advise you to bring your own penny to press.  That would be a mistake.  READ MORE

Complete set of 4.  These are rolled on circulated coins supplied by the machine.  The coins are typically zinc U.S. cents, although I have seen an occasional pre-1982 copper cent pop up.

The key word is “circulated.”  As you can see, they are not pretty.  This is a representative set, but all of the coins are flawed to various degrees.

Designs: White Water Walk; Horseshow Falls, Canada; maple leaf; crossed flags.

TABLE ROCK WELCOME CENTRE

FOOD COURT

Niagara Falls, Ontario

ON09.tablerockB.jpg

Set of 4 from the food court machine on the 1st floor of the visitor center.  The hand-crank machine has room for four dies, but one is blocked out (it was a “Maid of the Mist” design for the boat tour, but the company conducting the tours has changed to Hornblower).  The Maid of the Mist die is still on the machine, but most collectors probably skip right past it.

The machine supplies the U.S. cents used to roll the coins; they are circulated coins, and almost always zinc pennies.  The photo shows a representative set, but all coins will be circulated and show flaws from dirt, staining, and handling.

Designs: Horseshoe Falls; maple leaf; CN Tower (Toronto); Maid of the Mist

As of February 2017, all machines at Table Rock are reportedly gone.

WILLIS TOWER SKYDECK

The Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world when it was built in 1973.

Renamed the Willis Tower in 2009, the building has an observation deck (Skydeck) that is a major tourist attraction.  Four penny presses are located in the gift shop area.  We are able to feature complete sets from three of the machines (the fourth was out of order).  Unfortunately, this is one of the attractions in Chicago that charges top dollar for its coin sets.

Using the Pennycollector numering system, machines #11 & #12 press four designs on shiny zinc pennies provided by the machine.  Since the coins are supplied by the machine, we are unable to sell copper cents for machines 11 and 12.  Machine #8 is available in copper, though.

Machine #11 – zinc

Designs: Machine #11: Enjoy the View - Willis Tower; Navy Pier; Cloud Gate (popularly known as "The Bean" in Millennium Park);Barack Obama – 44th President of the U.S., all pressed on zinc pennies.

INDIANA DUNES

IN11.Dunes.jpg

copper.jpg retired.png

A machine was installed at the visitor center in early 2019.  Owned by the local Rotary Club, the machine had previously been in various local businesses in the Chesterton, Indiana, area.

Four new dies were introduced when the machine was moved to the Dunes.  The die ring is reportedly swapped out from time to time, reviving the designs that had been found in Chesterton (those designs are available below – George’s Gyros, set #IN10).

Designs: Indiana Dunes logo; Babapaloosa logo (a local event); Chesterton’s Thomas Centennial Park; Octave Chanute – Pioneer of Flight in the Dunes.

These coins are pressed on copper pennies that have been cleaned but can still show streaks and toning.  The designs roll slightly short, cutting off some wording on the borders. This machine is extremely temperamental – I visited three times before being able to finally press an entire set.

This machine was reported retired in mid-2021.

AMISH ACRES

NAPPANEE, INDIANA

Amish Acres was a shopping and amusement center in the heart of Indiana’s Amish country.  It closed in 2019 when the old owner wanted to retire but couldn’t find a single buyer.  Parts of the complex were sold at auction, and new owners have pledged to continue some of its operations, perhaps under a different name.  We arranged to purchase the 4 designs from their penny press rolled on pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.  When set up at Amish Acres, the machine only pressed pennies, but the other denominations were rolled by the machine’s owner after its removal from the shopping center.

We are selling these as circulated coins. The pennies definitely show signs of being pressed on circulated copper cents.  The nickels, dimes & quarters range from shiny uncirculated coins to an occasional coin showing some wear/patina.

INDIANA TURNPIKE

In 2016 the machines started being removed from the turnpike rest areas.

The machine formerly found at mile marker 56 (Rolling Prairie) was permanently removed years earlier.
