TOKENS WASHITA BATTLEFIELD NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE Cheyenne, Wyoming
The battlefield
site commemorates the 1868 Battle of Washita, where George Custer’s 7th
Cavalry engaged in a surprise attack on Cheyenne Indians who had left their
reservation after unfulfilled terms of a prior treaty left them without
provisions and caused tribes to raid government and settler supplies. A

NATIONAL PARK
TOKENS PORT CHICAGO NAVAL MAGAZINE NATIONAL MEMORIAL (CALIFORNIA) Concord, California
The
Port Chicago Naval Magazine National Memorial is in California (not Illinois),
and honors those 320 civilians and service members killed in the 1944
explosion of a ship during ammo-loading operations. Most of those killed were African-Americans
serving in a segregated Navy, and incident led to the largest Navy mutiny in
American history and eventually helped spur integration of the Navy. The Memorial is open to the public only
through reserved guided tours. A

TOKENS PETROGLYPH NATIONAL MONUMENT Bernalillo County, New Mexico
The monument
preserves volcanic cones and petroglyphs – rock carvings – left behind by the
Pueblo native people and Spanish settlers.
Some carvings date back 3,000 years. A

A
popular park in Colorado with immense sand dunes. The dunes were created when lakes receded from
this area and the remaining sand was blown into the dune field. Although the surrounding natural preserve
is much larger, the dunes themselves cover about 30 square miles. A

TOKENS JOHN MUIR NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE Martinez, California
John
Muir is known as the Father of the National Parks for his relentless efforts to
get natural areas preserved from agricultural and industrial
exploitation. The first national parks
had been declared by President Grant in the 1870s (Yellowstone and Mackinac
Island), but Muir used his love of nature and his time spent living in
Yosemite to persuade Theordore Roosevelt of the need for a more comprehensive
system of preservation. Muir
died in 1914, and the house where he lived in the San Francisco area was
designated a national historic site 50 years later. A

Caverns has been a popular tourist destination since its establishment as a
national park in 1930. Of more than
100 caves, only 3 are open to the public.

are highlighted by a massive flight of bats nightly. A

of the trial in the Dred Scott case (which reached the U.S. Supreme Court,

wooden nickels from the 2016 Fairy Tale Festival at the Edsel & Eleanor
Ford House. Edsel Ford was Henry
Ford’s only child, the namesake of the car, and the president of the Ford
Motor Company. His historic home in
Michigan is open for tours and hosts various events for the local community,
including Fairy Tale Days for the youngsters.
I believe these wooden nickels were used as tickets for rides and
games. The bottom two designs are
painted, and each coin will vary slightly in clarity and positioning. The upper nickel is a standard printed
wooden nickel. The rear of all wooden
nickels is blank. Set
of 3 in used condition. The photo
shows a representative set. We have
