THE CHICAGO COIN SHOWS

Annual conventions of the American Numismatics Association and the Central States Numismatic Society are held in the Chicago area, creating great opportunities for collectors to build their collections – not to mention the prevalence of penny presses throughout the Chicago area.  Attending the CSNS show in April (in Schaumburg) and the ANA World’s Fair of Money in August (Rosemont-O’Hare) are highlights of my year.

CSNS SHOW COIN ROLLED BY RAY DILLARD ON LUXEMBOURG ALUMINUM

I had Ray roll 10 copies of the 2019 CSNS design on Luxembourg 25 centimes, which are made from aluminum.  They make beautiful impressions.  I have 7 copies available.  They roll about the size of a nickel because of the soft metal.

2018 CONVENTION ELONGATED COINS

Schaumburg, Illinois

We discovered a hoard of these convention coins rolled by Ray Dillard for the April 2018 convention.  They are rolled on copper cents with stained backs showing Lincoln’s head and the penny’s date.  Due to handling over the years, I characterize them as being in circulated condition.

The Sears Tower was the tallest building in the world when it was built in 1973.

Renamed the Willis Tower in 2009, the building has an observation deck (Skydeck) that is a major tourist attraction.

All machines were reportedly removed.  We have only one machine left, pressed on copper.

This museum seems to confuse Pennycollector, as Pennycollector routinely posts a combination of current and retired machines as being currently available.

The following machines are available as of December 2023.  All others are retired:

Entry level: only 1 machine remains outside main gift shop (our set #IL19)

Lower level: Near Swiss Jolly Ball/vending area (our set #IL17); Henry Crown Space Center (our #IL14); Hallway between Space Center and U-boat (our #IL18); 8-die machine near Yesterday’s Main Street (our #IL25)

Main level: only 1 machine remains at the Transportation Gallery (our set #IL20)

Upper level: No machines

[We do not carry the medallion machines, but there is one on the Main Level and one at the Entry level; the single Tornado coin listed by PennyCollector has apparently long been retired.]

With the exception of the preloaded 8-die machine, all machines at MSI take 4 quarters and your own penny.  As a result, we offer copper cents as well as some foreign and steel penny sets.  There are change machines next to every 4-die machine at the museum.  MSI is also heavenly for collectors of Mold-A-Rama toys.

2 U-Boat designs on 2 euro-cent coins

The 2 U-boat designs from MSI pressed on German 2-euro-cent.  The reverse slightly shows the oak clusters on the original coin.  Sample reverse and source coin are also shown in the photo - you are receiving 2 coins.

Set of 4 on 1943 steel cents

Designated as Pennycollector machine #1, this set was located at the yellow stairs but was relocated to the Transportation Gallery when the train set of 4 (our set #IL16) was retired.  By 2022, this machine was located near the blue stairs on Lower Level 1 near the Swiss Jolly Ball.

The steel cents were cleaned, pressed on the wheat stalk side, and lightly sprayed with a clear coat to preserve the finish.

Designs: Museum building; logo; Earth Revealed; coal mine

Designs: Indiana Dunes logo; Babapaloosa logo (a local event); Chesterton’s Thomas Centennial Park; Octave Chanute – Pioneer of Flight in the Dunes.

These coins are pressed on copper pennies that have been cleaned but can still show streaks and toning.  The designs roll slightly short, cutting off some wording on the borders. This machine is extremely temperamental – I visited three times before being able to finally press an entire set.

This machine was reported retired in mid-2021.

INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK TOKEN

NP13.IndianaDunes.jpg

Single token from one of America’s newest national parks.  The Dunes became a national lakeshore in 1966 and were elevated to national park status in 2019.  Both sides of the token are shown in the photo – you will receive one token.  Size: standard national park token size, about the width of a quarter.

AMISH ACRES

NAPPANEE, INDIANA

Amish Acres was a shopping and amusement center in the heart of Indiana’s Amish country.  It closed in 2019 when the old owner wanted to retire but couldn’t find a single buyer.  Parts of the complex were sold at auction, and new owners have pledged to continue some of its operations, perhaps under a different name.  We arranged to purchase the 4 designs from their penny press rolled on pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.  When set up at Amish Acres, the machine only pressed pennies, but the other denominations were rolled by the machine’s owner after its removal from the shopping center.

We are selling these as circulated coins. The pennies definitely show signs of being pressed on circulated copper cents.  The nickels, dimes & quarters range from shiny uncirculated coins to an occasional coin showing some wear/patina.

KALAHARI RESORT – machine #2

Wisconsin Dells

WI12.Kalahari.mach2.jpg

ro

Kalahari has 5 penny presses, according to Pennycollector.com.  During my late April visit, I could find only two penny presses (plus the medallion machine).  Some may be located beyond paid areas (such as the water park).  I will check again in June.

Pennycollector machine #2 has 4 designs and takes our copper pennies, so this set is pressed on uncirculated pre-1982 copper cents.  This machine has a higher price, so we must charge more.

Designs: Indian head; Stand Rock; Kalahari logo; “My friends went to Wisconsin Dells and all I got was this lousy penny”

We have an additional Kalahari penny from a single-die machine on the NEW COINS page.

OF THE CN TOWER MACHINES

ON17.CNTower.EN.jpg

Obverse: English

Reverse: French

Perhaps the most famous structure in Toronto, the CN Tower has several coin presses but most are duplicate designs.  Out of 4 machines (16 coins), 7 are unique designs.

We pressed a small quantity on uncirculated U.S. nickels at the locations, eliminating the duplicate designs.  Three have the same artwork but mention different elevation levels for various features of the CN Tower (the SkyPod, the Glass Floor, and the Lookout.

These are inscribed in French on one side and English on the other.  Photos show both sides – you are buying 7 coins.  The frosted look on two coins is the result of lighting – they have the same look as the other coins.  Note that some roll short.

We were only able to roll 2 sets for selling.

These machines are all reportedly retired.

NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA

Niagara Falls is the anti-Disney.  Disney takes an artificial concept and makes it as good as they can.  Niagara Falls, Ontario, takes a natural beauty and does whatever it can to harm the experience.  READ MORE  I have limited quantities of these coins because it can be so frustrating to get them.

Machines are being removed from the Niagara Falls area because of the loss of the penny in Canada.  The locations with tokens seem to be maintaining their presence.

TABLE ROCK WELCOME CENTRE

FOOD COURT

Niagara Falls, Ontario

ON09.tablerockB.jpg

Set of 4 from the food court machine on the 1st floor of the visitor center.  The hand-crank machine has room for four dies, but one is blocked out (it was a “Maid of the Mist” design for the boat tour, but the company conducting the tours has changed to Hornblower).  The Maid of the Mist die is still on the machine, but most collectors probably skip right past it.

The machine supplies the U.S. cents used to roll the coins; they are circulated coins, and almost always zinc pennies.  The photo shows a representative set, but all coins will be circulated and show flaws from dirt, staining, and handling.

Designs: Horseshoe Falls; maple leaf; CN Tower (Toronto); Maid of the Mist

As of February 2017, all machines at Table Rock are reportedly gone.
